The Skinny – Airport Update, Celeb Hotspot, Gift Card Givaway, Specials, Live Music

Howdy Folks,

Wow, life in our new form & function with the airport is fascinating. “How’s that?” Well…

Check out this REMARKABLE 3-minute video by our Head Baker, Julian Rodier. You can get a sense of all the movin’ & shakin’ it has taken to get the airport operation up & running smoothly.
We’re receiving, processing, delivering & serving up a lot more volume of food than ever before…which means we’re buying A LOT of local product. In fact, we straight up ran through our source of pork shoulder recently and had to source alternatives. At the moment, all our pulled pork is coming from a nice farm in Maine…but as of mid-April, we’ll be back up with VT product. Thankfully, we’ve got a great team, we’re completely up to the challenge. I think, i hope, i believe we’re meeting & beating expectations at the airport.
The difference between travelers in the north & south terminal is measurable and ssurprising. North terminal travelers (US Air, American, United) tend to be more business-travel oriented & short on time. We’re sending out a lot more to-go boxes there. Travelers in the south terminal (Jet Blue, Delta & Porter) tend to be vacation travelers. They eat in & hang out at the bar longer & more casually.
woodyH And, as I’m sure you’ve heard in the talk about town, The Skinny Pancake at BTV is “a new celebrity hot spot.” Note Woody Harrilson in the photo on the right with our star employee, Monique! Fox News 44 has more on that story here. Word is Beyonce & Brad Pitt have been planning to jetset in for high tea, but all airlines are booked out with folks flying in to eat with us (ok, wishful thinking there…).

JOSHUA GLASS is a singer/songwriter from Burlington, Vermont who has been steadily gaining praise for his unique musical stylings, impassioned live performances, countless collaborations with other musicians, and busy schedule—playing nearly 100 shows in 2012 alone. “Glass’ voice is reminiscent to Paul McCartney’s, as is his pop-influenced songwriting”, writes THE VERMONT CYNIC. “While he is a proficient guitar player, the piano is clearly Glass’ home. He constantly toys, smiles and rocks out on his 88 keys. His catchy—but not too catchy—lyrics and melodies keep the mood light and the atmosphere enjoyable.” Embracing a “pop sensibility and improvisational style reminiscent of Allen Toussaint” (BURLINGTON CITY ARTS), Joshua, 27, labels his own work as “manic-depressive piano pop”—a blend of blue-eyed soul and handclap-heavy rock, tied together by his haunting and soulful vocals. Utilizing a distinct rhythmic, orchestral approach, which SEVEN DAYS’ Henry Soule describes as “coming close to the aural equivalent of imbibing whiskey”, Glass regularly exhibits his craft as a solo performer, with folk-duo THE WOEFUL LONELIES and band JOSHUA GLASS & THE MOOD STABILIZERS.

In addition to his solo work, Joshua remains active as a backing/session musician, joining the likes of JUSTIN LEVINSON & THE VALCOURS, THE BEERWORTH SISTERS, SET UP CITY, MYRA FLYNN, QUIET LION, AARON FLINN, and others. For his contributions to the musical community, Joshua was voted by readers of prestigious newspaper SEVEN DAYS as Vermont’s “BEST SIDE MUSICIAN” of 2011. Joshua Glass is currently in the process of recording an album of all-original material titled “SIDETRACKED, BABY”. Describing his upcoming debut as a record about “being crazy, in love, and crazy in love”, Glass is aiming for a 2013 release date—and staying busy every step of the way.

Caleb Caudle brings it all back home with Tobacco Town, his first solo album since 2007’s Red Bank Road. When the fiddle hits on the dynamic album-opener, “Blue or Gray,” the pace is set for a delightful backroad musical departure from Caudle’s work with the Bayonets. Released on Chapel Hill-based Robust Records, Tobacco Town—a nod to his hometown Winston-Salem, NC—sounds like Caudle is right at home. The album shows Caudle digging deeper to the roots of the Southern American music that has shaped him. Recorded in late-night sessions after work and in between tour dates, Tobacco Town features the impressive production of multi-instrumentalist Sam Kossler and the drumming of Chris Ankelein (Bayonets). Harmonies and fiddle are provided by both Caitlin Cary (Small Ponds/Whiskeytown) and singer-songwriter Haley Dreis. Caudle shows a gift for identifying the best arrangements of players to get the point of his songs across, never compromising his voice which has been called “singularly Americana.” The title track is a live, one-take recording of just Caleb’s voice and guitar. The full-band tracks shine no matter which genre they are highlighting from the bluegrass-tinged “Midnight Beauty” to the bouncy, 50s vibe of “Miss Me When You’re Gone.”

Thursday, April 11 7:00 PM
LOCATION: Burlington, VT
SUGGESTED DONATION: $5-$10

http://zackdupontmusic.com/

Zack duPont is a budding songwriter based out of Burlington, VT. At the young age of 26, his music has displayed nothing but gripping, natural potential and in return, has served as a vehicle for plays in most of the major cities in America. The sound is contemporary folk with a twist of soul and blues. His finger-style guitar techniques create the illusion of two guitars playing simultaneously and are accompanied by intriguing lyrics, haunting melodies and one of a kind harmonic structures.

The Zack duPont Quintet is a monster of a group. Will Andrews lends his warm, ethereal tones on trumpet, acting as another voice in the lush soundscape. Pat Melvin holds down the low end on upright and electric basses using unique bowed lines and strong vocal harmonies. Tim Sharbaugh has been a workhorse, drumming in the band for several years now. His ability to hold down a simple groove with shakers and mallets, while singing the odd harmony, makes him an incredible asset to the team. Peter Krag is the final piece of the puzzle. He has a musical sixth sense to always compliment a song. Vast knowledge of keyboard styles and textures along with the skill to perform any style of music, makes Peter one of the finest keyboard players in Vermont.

The result of this fine group of musicians is a sound that is unified, grounded and orchestral. What happens when an appalachian steam engine train collides with the city bound freight? You’ll have to go and see for yourself.
